Most of the Room 8 children participated at the Western Zone Basketball Blitz today at Walter Nash Stadium. This was a very well run event and it was amazing to see the progress the children made from their first to their fourth game. The children was also very polite and respectful towards others. The Normandale way!

Peace Week 2014
We learnt about Sadako Sasaki, a Japanese girl that lived in Hiroshima when the atomic bomb was dropped. She was diagnosed with leukemia as a result of her exposure to the bomb. As part of an old Japanese legend, Sadako tried to fold 1000 cranes so that she could be granted a wish. It is unsure how many cranes she managed to fold before she died in October 1955. The children in her class at school raised money for a special memorial for Sadako and all the children that died from the atomic bomb. It is called the Children's Peace Monument and is situated in Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima, Japan. It has a statue at the top of Sadako as well as an origami crane. At the bottom of the statue there is a plaque, which has a message from the children, which reads, "This is our cry. This is our prayer. Peace in the World."
We worked with Room 7 first to learn how to make an origami crane. Then on Friday, we got into our Whanau Groups and made our own special peace cranes with the Juniors. We are continuing to make them this week and hope to get to 1000. The cranes will then be thread onto fishing line and displayed in the school.
A big thank-you to Hayley for the wonderful photos.

Bush Builders at the Wellington Zoo
Last Thursday we had our Bush Builders launch at the Wellington Zoo. We started the day discussing the conservation of the Blue Penguin, drawing our conservation ideas on the concrete and leaving our hand print on a blue penguin. We then did some planting in an area of the zoo, something that we can visit in the future. Next, we followed a map to find points in the zoo where there was information about conservation. We then got to meet and touch Stonehenge, a tuatara. After lunch, we had discovery time throughout the zoo before heading back to school. What a great day!

Character Day
Wow! We had a wonderful last day of Term 2 dressing-up as characters from movies or books. We also got to complete a quiz about characters, listen to the teachers read their favourite picture books and participate in a school parade. Mr Scott was extremely impressed by the amount of children and staff that dressed-up for this event and participated in all of the events with enthusiasm. Congratulations to John and Maisy for winning the best dressed boy and girl from Room 8.

National Young Leaders Day 2014
On the 26th of May, the Year 6 children and two Year 5 School Councillors attended the National Young Leaders Day at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington.
All of the speakers were very inspiring and we all learnt a lot about what it takes to make a great leader.
Thank-you very much to the parents that helped with transport to and from the school and Petone train station.
