Sharing our Cicada Writing

We have been writing explanations of how and why cicadas make their noise. We decided that a great audience for this piece of writing could be some of the Juniors. So we head off to Room 3 yesterday to share our work. We got a lot of feedback from the younger kids and they remembered a lot of information about cicada's. Well done Room 8, you surely are a great learning community!

Senior Trip to California and Harcourt Parks

Last friday we had an awesome trip to California and Harcourt Parks in Upper Hutt to learn about the fault line.  We looked a lot at the surrounding landforms, including the hills that surround the park and river.  We also measured some of the river terraces and worked out how they moved and how old they are.  After all of our learning time led by Mr Thomson, we squeezed in some fun time at the Harcourt Park Playground.  What a great day!

Mr Thomson's Visit

We were really fortunate to have Mr Thomson from GNS visit the Senior Syndicate.  He introduced us to the landforms around the Wellington region, showed us some interesting rocks and showed us some of the amazing things he does as part of his job.

First Posting on ePortfolios for 2014!

The children of Room 8 have been busy this afternoon putting their first reflection on their ePortfolio's.  The children reflected on the Room 8 Class Treaty which we all put a lot of hard work into.  The class treaty and reflection questions are listed below.  Please check your child's portfolio regularly and make comments to support them with their learning.

Reflection questions: What did you like/dislike about the process you went through to produce the class treaty?  If you disliked the process in any way, what could be done to improve it?
Choose one of the rights you think is very important and write it in your reflection?  Why do you think this particular right is so important?
Choose one of the responsibilities you think is very important and write it in your reflection.  Why do you think this particular responsibility is so important?
How do you think the class treaty will help us to have a smooth year?  Do you think people will value it?  Why? Why not?

LEARNZ Virtual Field Trip

As part of our unit/inquiry work on Natural Disasters, we have been involved in a virtual field trip.  This is a programme which takes the children to remote places all over New Zealand.  We went on a Geohazards trip to the Bay of Plenty and studied volcanoes, tsunamis, landslides, earthquakes and hydrothermals.  All of the children have the class log on and password for the LEARNZ site.  Ask your child to show you what he/she did during this learning experience.

What amazing artists we have in Room 8!

We have been working on our portrait techniques so far this term for art.  We have been doing watercolour pictures of ourselves and have started our new ones in crayon.

Beautiful Cinders visits Room 8

Today we had the pleasure of meeting Maisy's minilop rabbit named Cinders.  A minilop is a type of rabbit that have ears that hang down.  Some of us got to hold Cinders before she went back in her cage.  Thanks Maisy for sharing her with us.
